Sakonnet Arts Volunteers Recognized in Little Compton
Volunteers from Sakonnet Arts Network were recognized on April 26 at Little Compton’s annual Volunteer Recognition Night. Debbie Ort, Activities Director at the Visiting Nurse Association presented the award to members of “Sophie’s Corner,” a program begun 18 months ago by Helen Nadler. Helen’s standard poodle, Sophie, is a trained pet therapy dog. She has accompanied the volunteers as they engage clients in various art projects. The volunteers include Ms. Nadler, Dianna Parente, Jennifer Teichman, Carolyn Winter, Alesandra Woodhouse, and Helen Woodhouse. Claire Tremblay, Pamela Sobel, Janet Gendreau and Lois Marshall are past volunteers.
Attendees of the Adult Day Health Program reside in Tiverton and Little Compton; most are disabled by dementia. All enjoy painting with watercolors, building sculptures or creating colorful collages in weekly workshops. Some of their comments about these experiences include, “You make me happy” and “I like making things with you” and “I like to do art.” The workshops are equally gratifying for the volunteers as conversations and memories are shared with participants while they shape soft clay or transform a white paper into a painting…
A little time (about an hour twice a month), patience and compassion are all you need to join the Sophie’s Corner group as a volunteer. Please email info@SakonnetArts.org if you’d like to share in this experience.

Monday, June 7, 2010 at 6:30 pm Please join us!
The Westport Art Group is proud to present a pastel painting demonstration by Jean Hirons, a signature member of the Pastel Society of America, the Maryland Pastel Society, and the Pastel Painters’ Society of Cape Cod.
Jean Hirons is a native of Mattapoisett, now residing in Rockville, Maryland. She works solely in pastel, loving the intimacy of the medium and the vibrancy of the pigments. She focuses on landscape, seeking underlying abstract patterns of value and color. She is particularly interested in capturing the feel and mood of a scene, as well as the rhythm of shadow and light. She prefers the softest of pastels and works on sanded pastel papers and on textured boards that she prepares herself.
Jean travels to Mattapoisett twice a year to visit family. In the summer she paints on site; at Christmas she takes photos for studio work. She has been painting scenes of Mattapoisett and the South Coast for over twenty years.
After receiving a BFA from Marietta College Jean studied art at the Corcoran School of Art and the Art League in Alexandria, VA., and since 2001, has taken workshops from the leading pastel artists in the U.S. She is an adjunct professor at Montgomery College

in Rockville and teaches privately as well. She is represented by the Waverly Street Gallery in Bethesda, MD and Collyer’s Gallery in Mattapoisett. Her paintings have won many awards.

During her career she won two of the American Library Association’s highest awards. In June 2003, she took early retirement in order to devote her time to pastel painting.

Friends, Fun, Food & Fundraising
at Ferolbink Farm
Over 200 guests attended the Tiverton Land Trust's"Summer's Eve" at Ferolbink Farm on July 23. Sakonnet Arts Network organized the live art auction, Open Spaces, Coastal Places, that raised over $12,000 to be shared with the Land Trust to preserve open space in Tiverton and to enhance art programs in the area. Thanks to all who made this event such a success!

Update on Senior Outreach Program
We started an outreach program for the elder members of our community back in November. The Visiting Nurse Association of Little Compton runs an adult daycare center for clients struggling with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia and were very welcoming to our proposal for art classes. We have an added dimension of the work: loving company of Sophie, the pet therapy dog. Sophie is a large black standard poodle (unfashionable haircut) with limpid brown eyes and affection for everyone, a great asset to our painting efforts. We have decided to call this program Sophie’s Corner.
We have added two new members to our ranks Lois Marshall and Jennifer Teichman. Other team members, Carolyn Winter, Pamela Sobel, Claire Trembly, and Helen Nadler. We have a schedule of simple art projects for about two months in advance. We are getting to know these great people with whom we work and the wonderful staff who care for them. The time commitment is so flexible; requires a hour just every so often.
Please join us if you want to have some fun and MAKE A DIFFERENCE! We all have much to learn from these patient people. CALL Helen Nadler, 401-624-9974
