Leslie Lindeman states: I have been taking photographs since I was very young – sometimes for income, always for pleasure. I prefer to shoot the paintings Mother Nature creates – the antics of creatures, the beauty of flora and fauna, and the ever-changing splendor of the seasons. I also put my photographic skills to work for my business, Effective Marketing Strategies, where I plan, direct, write, and edit for public relations campaigns, direct mail programs, newsletters, brochures, web sites, videos and other promotional materials. Kelly Milukas
(MI 1965- living RI)

“Many things inspire me to paint. Travel, the surroundings of the place I live, a passion for food, and the simple humor found in people and animals, spark my creative vision. The light, texture and repetition of patterns in the land, and city streets, the taste and the smell of local markets, they are the core of my art. My goal is to infuse my personal experience on paper, to interpret the memory and create a visual space for it to exist in. "

Milukas is a fine artist working in both pastels and watercolors. She studied at the University of Southern Maine and earned a BA in Arts with a concentration in sculpture. While primarily a studio painter she also works "Plein Air". Her extensive travel experiences throughout the United States, Europe, Morocco, the South Pacific, Iceland, Asia and the Caribbean, provide her with much of her creative inspiration. Her artistic vision is expressed in her vibrant seascapes and landscapes, rural town scenes, and studies of markets filled with indigenous foods and local color.

"My particular interest in making paintings and drawings is to invite the viewer into an emotional or spiritual relationship with the landscape. I draw the viewer into the scene to be surrounded by it and then lost in it.

I’m also attracted to a view that is filled with sharp contrasts of lights and darks. The surface interplay of patterns and the calligraphic sense of line in the landscape are also extremely important to me.

I like to play with the dichotomy of the landscape as realistic and abstract at the same time.

Wildlife inspires me: the curve in a feather, the veins of a leaf, the iridescent colors in a fish. My latest work focuses on local flora and fauna: striper, blue, lobster, crab, lily, hydrangea, heron, chickadee… Using fabric paints I apply multiple layers of paint to raw, washed and ironed canvas. Then, I turn the painting into a pillow, tapestry, carpet or the like; infusing practical things with unexpected splendor.

My artistic development in the studio is informed by my training as an art historian. I hold a BA and MA in Art History from the University of Colorado. There I studied Italian Renaissance art theory and the science of Leonardo’s art. I pursued my doctoral studies at Brown University. Awarded a US Fulbright Scholarship in 1995-96, I examined Spanish Golden Age Painting in Madrid and Seville. While always intrigued by researching, writing and teaching I love to paint.
