7th & 8th grade REEL GIRLS
with Gloria Crist
A drama and film empowerment program offered in cooperation with the R.I. Film Collaborative.
In Part I, girls will write scripts, cast and direct scenes that address challenges they identify (i.e., peer pressure or social conflicts). Student teams will develop skits and scenarios that focus on positive ways to communicate and respond to situations that may be difficult. Appropriate topics will be discussed under the guidance of the instructor.
In Part II, to be offered in the winter, each team will work with a camera. Students will create small “shorts,” building on skills learned earlier and then shooting their films. Members of the R.I. Film Collaborative will assist with editing, sound and lighting. Films will be showcased for the school and for the community at a special red carpet screening!
Participants must commit to both sessions of REEL GIRLS. Each girl must write a brief statement about why she wants to participate in the class and send it with the registration form.

Youth Programs
ArtsExpress
An Arts Enrichment Program for
Elementary School Students
What is ArtsExpress?
ArtsExpress is the arts enrichment program that has run at Pocasset School since 2005. Classes have included hip-hop dance, ballet, Painting Stories, clay mural building, drumming, recycled sculpture, and musical theater. During its first 3 years, over 500 students in first through fourth grades participated in the program. The program has received funding from the Pocasset PTO, The Newport County Fund (of the Rhode Island Foundation), the William C. Bowling Memorial Fund, Friends of Arts in Tiverton, the Tiverton Arts Council, and from students themselves (proceeds from a bottle drive). Participants mirror the student body at Pocasset in terms of their economic diversity and percentage with special needs. All share in the joy of discovering self- confidence and developing fluency in the arts.
In the 2007-2008 school year, due to school renovations, an artist-in-residence program was offered during school hours over a 4-week period in lieu of after school classes. Ms. Eileen Harris led the program and worked with all classes in the school, including kindergarten. She energized the children and captured their imaginations as she approached literacy through the lens of drama. Students were actively engaged in this process and thoroughly enjoyed acting out the parts of characters while bringing stories to life.
Similar enrichment programs have been held at Fort Barton (2006-2007) and Ranger Schools (2006-2008). In addition to the arts, those programs have featured offerings such as science and sports.
How can your child be involved?
Classes are offered after school. When resources permit, artist-in-residence programs are blended into the child’s school day. Look for sign-up flyers that are sent home with your child, check reminders from your PTO, or visit our website again.
How can you help these programs continue?
Community and parent volunteers are vital to planning and running all of these programs. If you are interested in becoming involved with ArtsExpress, please contact us at info@SakonnetArts.org or call Janet Gendreau at 401 396-9910.
