Spring After School Programs

Notes:

• Registration is on a first come, first served basis. Refunds are not available unless class is cancelled by Sakonnet Arts Network.

• All Sakonnet Arts Network school-based programs are open to home-schooled and private school students living in Tiverton.

• Scholarships are available.

• Photographs of participants and their work may be used for media releases and the Sakonnet Arts Network website. The student’s name, school, grade level, or age may be included. • Students are welcome to bring a drink or snack (no nuts) to enjoy before the class begins.

Look Listen Leap into Art
Tuesday, 1st and 2nd graders
Class Fee: $25.00


Look closely at great picture book illustrations, listen to stories come alive, and leap into creating works of art in the style of great picture book artists such as Eric Carle, Ezra Jack Keats, and other renowned children’s book illustrators. Try your hand at tissue paper art, printmaking, collage, and more using a variety of media.

Artist- Janet Taylor-Kosinski, Coordinator of Children’s Services for 22 years in Tiverton’s public library system, enjoys sharing her love of both the words and pictures as stories come alive.

Theater Arts Tuesday

3rd and 4th graders
Class Fee: $25.00


This is the perfect class for any kid who loves to perform and use his or her imagination. Theater games and scene work help develop confidence both on and off the stage!

Artist – Gloria Crist has taught musical theater to children for over 11 years. She is the interim chair of Sakonnet Arts Network, the RI Arts Learning Network East Bay Rep, the owner of Theater Direct Community Theater, the drama instructor of THS, and a stage and television actress.

Sculpting Thursday

All grades welcome
Class Fee: $25.00


Would you like to create a different sculpture every week using a wide variety of materials including clay, paper, wood, markers, glue & kid friendly wire!? Students learn basic sculpting techniques. Creativity is strongly encouraged!

Artists – Sue Kent and Gary Farias have been teaching Art, Painting & Design for 15 years under the name of Primary Colors. Gary has a BFA in painting from Swain School of Design; Sue has a BA in Art/Graphic Design from RIC. Together the couple currently free-lances from their home studio for a number of greeting card & product development companies.

Beginning Ballet Tuesday

All grades welcome
Class Fee: $25.00


Always wanted to pirouette? Then this introductory course is for you! We'll learn the basics of ballet positions, including proper arm form, and begin to build a dance as we master techniques. Move with elegance and grace as you develop strength and coordination!

Artist – Kelsey Gauvin has been dancing for 13 years at Delights School of Dance. For eight of those years Kelsey has assisted in teaching dance to the younger grades. Kelsey, a THS graduate, is the assistant coach of the THS dance squad. In addition to dancing, Kelsey is a singer and an actress in the Theater Direct community theater company.

Hip Hop Wednesday

All grades welcome
Class Fee: $25.00

Hip Hop is a blast! Check out this introductory course offered to all ages.  In beginning hip hop we’ll learn some basic steps, put them to music, and get moving with this free-form, energetic, different style of dancing. We will start a dance and continue to work it each week…maybe we’ll have time to create a few new dances! Nothing crazy… just a fun, funky, workout-type movement.

Storytelling Artist – John McKenna
is a graduate of RIC in elementary ed, and of The Trinity Rep Conservatory in acting, directing and playwriting. A performance storyteller and member of the improv comedy group SkyPunch, John has also performed with various local theaters, and taught acting and improv workshops at many schools.

Comedy/Improv

Spontaneity is at the heart of all creative endeavors and improvisation is the core of an actor's training.  This program will address skills of listening, staying in the moment and honest interaction, as well as character development & playing an action.

Felting

Wednesdays, 5th-8th
Class Fee: $40 (members); $55.00 (non-members)


Now you can learn to felt wool fibers together to form a non-woven textile. Beads, pockets, and flat squares can be   transformed into your own creations. Artist – Jennifer Nardonehas taught several workshops through the Fuller Craft Museum. She also taught at UMass Dartmouth as a graduate student in their Artisanry program in Textile/Fiber Art. Jenn enjoys sewing, knitting, felting, and weaving functional and sculptural objects.

Comic Illustrations

Wednesdays, 5th-8th

Here is your opportunity to learn the basic drawing techniques used in comic book illustration. During this course you will develop your own superhero and create a short story featuring your character.

Artist:   Mike Zompa 
is a graduate of  UMASS Dartmouth, where he  majored in illustration. Mike enjoys drawing and collecting comic books.

Screen Printing

Wednesdays 7th - 8th
Class Fee: $40 (members); $55.00 (non-members)


Students will discover the history and techniques of screen printing as they are introduced to the simpler methods of pushing ink through a stencil, to the more involved  process using photo emulsions. Screen Print Artist – Adam Tracy has taught at TMS 2007. A RIC graduate with major in Art Education and a studio concentration in painting, Adam has been screen printing since high school. Through college, Adam designed his own clothing line.

Acting for Theater & Film

Thursdays, 5th -- 8th

Learn the basic skills for acting for theater:  how to audition- what to study- how to develop a character...and then compare all this to what it takes to work in film & TV. Plenty of role play and hands-on training.

Ceramics

Thursdays 5th – 8th

After exploring pottery styles from many cultures, students will learn a variety of hand building techniques to create a unique ceramic vessel. Artist—Pam Nadeau, who is the art teacher at TMS, taught this popular after school workshop last spring.
